'Run, Salmon, Run'
This is a truly a one of a kind piece, featuring not one- but two original art pieces.
The back of this burl was too beautiful to lay flush with a wall, and so my hopes is that this piece will find a home somewhere is can be seen from both sides.
Featuring one of the most famous duo’s here in Canada - The bear and the Salmon.
The birds eye of the burl has a look that is so reminiscent of water, There was no question as to what this piece was to become, I just had to figure out how to do it.
I wanted to pay homage to the patterns of the burl without covering it- to burn an image over that birds eye pattern would be out of the question, almost a crime. I wanted to ensure that the wood grains would be a key feature to the concept of the piece.
Fir is a notoriously difficult wood to burn on, and one usually avoided due to the combination of soft flesh and hard rings of the woods burning surface, however the density of the diseased burl allowed for a more forgiving surface to work with. And dang, What a burl.
The fur of the bears have been carved into the wood deeply; adding texture and realistic depth to the piece. The coarse wet fur textures a contrast to the smooth scales of the Salmon; but both outshone by the natural beauty of the Burl patterns representing the splashes of river water.
This is a double sided piece designed to be displayed standing on a level surface, one in which you can view both sides of the piece.
Because of this, no hardware has been installed, as it will be determined by the buyer as to which hardware is installed.
